Imagine a world where objects are
simplified into smooth, flat planes. Paper is everywhere. It constructs the
walls of the buildings, implies the presence of tangibility, and forms objects
by mimicking their visual properties through the manipulation of paper.
Embarking on a journey, we enter a city block exploring the fictional world of
paper and its layers, experiencing the tactility of the medium through video
projection and the objects themselves.
THE
PAPERSCAPE is an installation of a video portrait of an abandoned city block
and the exhibition of a paper city. The installation of the buildings provides material and
fabrication evidence of the video, viewers become aware of the scale,
production techniques, and imperfections of the objects. The viewers can fully
observe and critique the urban landscape freely, rather then observing the city
through selected video fragments. The video piece of the project is intended to
show the details of the objects at a miniature viewpoint, opening a window to
the imaginative world that is not evident in the installation of the buildings.
My thesis investigates the bodily experience between the cinematic image and the viewer through representations and simulations of the paper environment. The tactile experience is divided into two experiences, the interaction through a digital frame where tactility of the materiality is experience through the representation and memory of paper, the installation of buildings provides a physical presence and presents a different tactile experience. In both experiences, the seductive appeal of paper-crafted objects immerses the viewer in the spaces. The technical set-up of the project challenges the physical and sensory dimensions of representation, exploring the relationship between the digital and the tangible.
